Restoring More Than Electricity
Problem
Charles , a U.S. Army Iraq veteran, was living without electricity after his service was disconnected because of an overdue utility bill. Living on VA disability compensation and coping with service-connected PTSD, he was unable to keep up with the growing debt. His mother, who serves as his caregiver under a Durable Power of Attorney, helped him seek assistance before the situation became even more serious.
Without electricity, Charles remained in his apartment under increasingly difficult living conditions while searching for a way to restore this essential service.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed Charles's circumstances after receiving the referral and verified the outstanding utility balance. Because the amount exceeded the maximum assistance available through VVFS's Dominion Energy pledge program, an alternative source of emergency assistance was needed.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to help satisfy the overdue Dominion Energy bill and restore electrical service.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant addressed an immediate crisis by helping restore an essential utility and allowing Charles to safely remain in his home. Reliable electricity is fundamental to health, safety, and daily living, and restoring service provided much-needed stability during a difficult period.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance prevented a temporary financial hardship from becoming a prolonged crisis. By responding quickly when other resources were unavailable, the partnership helped ensure that an Iraq veteran could once again live in a safe and stable environment while continuing his path toward recovery.
