Problem
Reggie, a U.S. Army veteran who served honorably from 1981 to 1992, relies on a fixed income from Social Security and VA disability compensation. As a double amputee, he depends on a specially adapted vehicle for his mobility and independence. Although the Department of Veterans Affairs had previously provided a one-time grant to modify the vehicle to meet his medical needs, it was unable to assist with subsequent repairs because his mobility limitations were not service-connected.
When the vehicle no longer passed Virginia's required safety inspection, Reggie faced the possibility of losing the dependable transportation he relied on for essential medical appointments. The cost of repairs was beyond what he could afford on his limited income.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed Reggie's circumstances and verified that repairing the vehicle was critical to maintaining his mobility and access to medical care. Recognizing that the veteran had exhausted other available resources, VVFS requested emergency financial assistance.
The request was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, where emergency financial assistance made possible through charitable contributions to the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF) was approved to cover the necessary vehicle repairs and return the adapted vehicle to safe operating condition.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant helped restore safe, reliable transportation for a veteran whose independence depends on his adapted vehicle. With the repairs completed, Reggie could continue traveling to medical appointments and meeting his daily needs without the added burden of unreliable transportation.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance prevented an unexpected vehicle repair from becoming a larger barrier to independence. By helping preserve a vital source of mobility, the partnership ensured that a veteran living with significant physical disabilities could continue moving forward with dignity, confidence, and greater peace of mind.
