Helping a Veteran Through a Difficult Transition
Problem
Chad found himself in an exceptionally difficult period of transition after becoming unable to work because of a disabling condition. While awaiting a decision on his Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application, he had no stable source of income and struggled to keep up with essential household expenses.
Earlier assistance had helped him through one immediate utility crisis, but without an income, his electric bill continued to grow. An outstanding balance threatened his ability to maintain essential utility service at a time when warmer weather made access to cooling increasingly important for his health and safety.
Action
Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) had been working with Chad since February, assisting him with his Social Security application and helping him access available community resources. After previously securing utility assistance through the Energy Share program, VVFS continued to monitor his situation as he waited for a decision on his disability benefits.
Recognizing that additional assistance was needed to bridge this temporary gap, VVFS referred the request to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227. Through charitable contributions raised by the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF), emergency financial assistance was approved to bring Chad's utility account current while he awaited his SSDI determination.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time utility grant helped preserve an essential service during a period when Chad had no dependable income. By eliminating the outstanding balance, the assistance provided the stability he needed while waiting for a decision on his disability benefits and positioned him to resume maintaining his utility payments once income was established.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance helped prevent a temporary financial hardship from becoming a larger crisis. The grant provided peace of mind during an uncertain time and helped ensure that Chad could remain safely in his home while taking the next steps toward financial stability.
