Helping a Veteran Stay in His Home
Problem
Turner, a 61-year-old Gulf War veteran, faced an unexpected financial crisis after losing his federal employment earlier in the year. While actively searching for work, he had no monthly income and was relying on withdrawals from his retirement savings to pay his mortgage and other essential living expenses.
Although he carefully managed his finances and maintained an excellent credit history, Turner was concerned that his retirement funds would be depleted before he became eligible for Social Security benefits. With his next mortgage payment approaching, he sought temporary assistance to help preserve his home while working toward reemployment.
Action
A Virginia Veteran and Family Support (VVFS) Resource Specialist reviewed Turner's circumstances and developed a plan to help him regain long-term financial stability. VVFS connected him with employment resources through the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, assisted him with filing his initial VA disability claim, helped enroll him in VA health care, and provided a credit toward his utility expenses to reduce his immediate financial burden.
The request for emergency mortgage assistance was referred to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227. Through charitable contributions raised by the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVVF), emergency financial assistance was approved to help cover his upcoming mortgage payment while he continued seeking employment.
Outcome & Impact
The one-time grant helped relieve immediate financial pressure and protected Turner's housing during a difficult period of transition. By helping him remain current on his mortgage, the assistance allowed him to focus on returning to the workforce without the added worry of losing his home.
Through the partnership of VVFS, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 227, and the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, timely assistance helped bridge the gap between job loss and financial recovery. Combined with employment services, VA health care enrollment, and assistance in pursuing VA benefits, the grant provided meaningful support as Turner worked toward restoring his financial independence and long-term stability.
